Watch Joaquin Phoenix Do a Creepy Dance in ‘Joker’ | Anatomy of a Scene

A run-down bathroom with a flickering fluorescent light, a swooning piece of music and some slow, deliberate moves. Those spare ingredients go into crafting this downbeat but memorable moment from “Joker.”
When the scene begins, Arthur Fleck (a.k.a. the Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix) has just had an intense, life-defining moment and finds a bathroom to collect and calm himself. He does so with a dance that the director Todd Phillips said Phoenix came up with on the day of the shoot. In his narration, Phillips discusses the music (by Hildur Gudnadottir), and how he and Phoenix came to change the scene from what was in the script.

The critics panned Joker because they couldn’t handle a villain as a protagonist in a story or film.

It's not creepy at all. In fact it is liberating and very artful....it is an expression of who he is and who he is shaping up to be. It is a catharsis after his explosive release against THE BULLY. It's not about right or wrong at this time that I consider but Arthur's way of coping with his very very aweful life that makes it beautiful in the midst of the tragedy playing out...which Arthur later finds humorous and couches as a comedy and in truth most comedians laugh at their pain and most of our comical entertainment is mostly that...making fun of something that intrisically hurts us. I find it beautiful in a heavy way. To bring out beauty however small from great evil is somehthing like a rose in mud.

This reminded me of Butoh. His acting was incredible. The movie was heavily flawed, and critics will overlook this because they will, understandably so, be so mesmerized by some of the best acting of this century.

This scene alone shows what a genius actor is capable of... Just an improvisation idea and flowing with it, let it go, be the character... Joaquin is the best, he should have 2 Oscars by now.

Joaquin Phoenix didn't just play this character beautifully, with an extraordinary performance. He improvised this scene, by turning his character's thoughts and feelings into dance and if this scene is now one of the most beautiful scenes of the movie is thanks to him. This is a proof that Phoenix put all his soul into this character, to the point that he disappears and we only see Arthur and Joker. When an actor is able to give new interpretation to his character's feelings by turning few lines of the script into something more deep and beautiful, that's when an actor becomes an artist! Phoenix definitely deserves all the awards for that performance and for his dedication and passion. I want to thank Todd Phillips, because he is the one gave Phoenix this oportunity.

This scene is like a line of poetry, no logical words but describes the inner spirit change of the protagonist. One of the scenes of this decade.

I find it offensive that Joker is not a black woman. Like why does it have to be another white male?? eww

During the entire movie he dances when he's happy and angry. But in the bathroom he's finally given in and he needs to collect his thoughts and he does this by dance. He dances with his mom because he was happy. He's happy with his mom and that's why he danced with her. He was angry at mury and the rest of society and danced on his way to the studio knowing what he was going to do in front of everyone.
